I AM BEING OVERWHELMED

Everyone is busy today. Even children end up juggling their schedules. Homework, sports, music or dance lessons and just having times to be with friends or be by themselves can present quite a challenge. And this is when things are going well. When something goes wrong or someone becomes ill life becomes even more complicated. As a result, people frequently end up feeling totally exhausted and overwhelmed.

In the Bible, water is both a sign of life and a sign of overwhelming challenges.

  • In the very beginning, the earth was filled with darkness and water covered the earth. A mighty wind, God's Spirit, swept over the waters and parted them and dry land appeared. God was bringing order out of chaos.
  • This story is repeated at the time of Moses. When the Hebrew people were trapped between the waters of the Red Sea and Pharoah's oncoming chariots, God caused a mighty wind to sweep over the Red Sea and dry land to appear. The people crossed over to freedom with a wall of water to their right and to their left.

  • One night the disciple were crossing the Sea of Galilee. Jesus was asleep in the boat when a violent storm came up. His disciples woke him and Jesus calmed the storm. (Mk 4:35-41). Then they said, "Who is this that even the wind and seas obey him?" The answer of course is the Son of God.

At one time or another chaos can seem to rule our life. We can feel trapped and overwhelmed. What are we to do in these situations? Call upon God. Ask the Risen Lord to calm the storms of our life. God who has always acted to save his people will respond.
