Grade 6 B
Welcome to 6B
In room 6B students study:
Math: Our focus in math in sixth grade is the study of fractions, percents, and decimals. We strive to understand and work concretely with this concepts and their functions, and also their mathmatical relationship with each other. We also study pre-algebra and geometry.
Science: Sixth grade focuses on Earth Science. Our major units of study our oceanography, earthquakes, volcanoes, weather, and astronomy. During each unit, we focus on our Christian responsibilities as stewards of the earth, and how students can use science knowledge to act up those responsibilities.
Writing: As sixth graders, we apply knowledge of writing techniques and conventions we have learned previously to improve communication through writing. We put these tools to use through many different types of writing, understanding that effective writers are effective communicators.
Monthly Highlights: May
Math: Our unit through the end of the school year will focus on geometry. We will study angles and work mathematically with various geometric shapes. There is a lot of new vocabulary to learn in this unit.
Science: As a conclusion to our volcano study, we will be presenting our Volcano PowerPoints in class the next few weeks. Independently, students are designing and building a volcano model, which they will present on June 3rd.
This month in science we will study astronomy and space exploration. We will also spend time on science activities preparing us for our unit studies at Environmental Education Camp in June.
Writing: As a conclusion to learning about effective persuasive writing, students wrote "letters of complaint" based on their own experiences. Now we are learning how to communicate directions through writing. All writing focuses on becoming better writers through planning and prewriting, using graphic organizers and peer editing.
Relay for Life Walk: This Friday, May 14th, we will be walking in the Relay for Life walk to benefit our St. Charles Relay for Life Team. Donations are gratefully accepted. Students can bring donations to school starting Monday. Please join us from 2:15-2:45 if you are able.
Science Camp Free Dress Fundraiser: Students can "buy" free dress for 2.00. They will be awarded free dress on Friday, May 14th. $2.00 can be turned into their classroom teacher by Thursday, May 13th. We appreciate our school community supporting our fund raising efforts for Science Camp.
Volcano Day/Night: June 3rd will be a disasterous day..... in a good way!!! Students have been designing and building volcanos, and eruption demonstrations will take place morning and afternoon on Thursday, June 3rd. We will also have an evening session.
Math Relay: On Friday, June 4th, we will attend the "Math Relays" at Franklin Pierce High School. We'll join other fourth, fifth, and sixth graders from the Tacoma area for a unique combination of math and physical fitness. We appreciate any parent drivers and supporters for this event. A letter and permission slip should have arrived home with your student today.
Environmental Ed Camp: 6th Graders will attend Environmental Ed Camp at Camp Hamilton June 7-9. The focus and goals of our CYO camping experience is to appreciate God's gifts in a nature setting, to obtain science knowledge through studying our Northwest environment, to build community and fellowship with each other, and to gain confidence in ourselves. It is going to be a wonderful three days, and we are so grateful to our school community and our parents for providing us the opportunity. Thank you to all parents for completing the paperwork needed for camp. All students have turned in all their paperwork!! Whew!
Edline: Edline is a wonderful tool for you to access your child's progress, find out about any missing work (heaven forbid!) and find our about upcoming events. Please let us know if you are having trouble using this site.
Have a great month!
