Head’s Up- We will have a test on the different types of traditional literature next week on 9/28. Please help students to review their notes (in their reading journals) nightly a week or so heading up to the test.

Vocabulary and Spelling Words this Week: impressive, assault, strategy, numerous, villain, shrewd, dispute, justify, misleading, productive, converted, abandoned

October Book Report: The kids will be checking out a fiction book when they go to library class on Friday. Students will have about 2-3 weeks to read this book, and then book report requirements will be passed in in October.

Cougar Club: Students in 5th grade are expected to read 225 pages in various books each month. Cougar Club forms are in the classroom (or you can just use any sheet of paper) and are due at the end of the month.  Remember a parent signature is required. Silent reading time in class is given to help accomplish this monthly goal. September’s Cougar Club form is due 9/29. This will be for a HW grade in Literature.

Reading Counts: Students will be asked to complete 2 reading counts tests.  These can only be done at school!  In order to receive a passing grade, students must receive a score of 8, 9, or 10 out of 10.

The requirements are as follows:

1. take a reading counts test on their book report book (this will be part of their final book report project grade in October)

2.  take a test on the novel read in language arts class when the book is completed

**Just a reminder that not all books qualify as a Reading Counts book.  The books the students check out in the school library with blue tape on the spine are Reading Counts.  If they choose a book that is not reading counts they will need to answer questions verbally with their teacher to ensure comprehension.

September’s Virtue = Joy, September’s Saint = St. Bernadette

5th Grade Prayers: This month, students need to recite the following prayers – Sign of the Cross, Grace before Meals, Our Father, Morning Offering

GRACE BEFORE MEALS - Bless us, O Lord, and these thy gifts, which we are about to receive from thy bounty, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE OUR FATHER - Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen

MORNING OFFERING - O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works, joys and sufferings of this day for all the intentions of your Sacred Heart, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, for salvation of souls, the reparation for sins, the reunion of all Christians, and in particular for the intentions of the Holy Father this month. Amen.
