Cell Phone and Other Electronics Use by Students

Cell Phone and Other Electronics Use by Students

The use of cell phones, ipods/mp-3 players, etc,, in our society is rapidly expanding to include a larger proportion of young people, including those of grade school age. As usage expands so does the question of school procedure regarding use of cell phones and other electronic devices during school hours and even more so, text-messaging by students. The following guidelines have been established regarding cell-phones and electronics at St. Charles Borromeo School:
  •  Cell phones will not be allowed to be used during school hours; from 8:00 to 3:00pm on a regular school day.
  • Cell phones will be required to be confined to the students’ backpack or locker during school hours (it is strongly recommended that lockers be locked so phones do not disappear).
  •  Anyone caught text-messaging or using the phone during a test will receive a 0% on that test.
  •  Cell phones must be shut off during school hours; a cell-phone causing a classroom distraction (ringing, alarms, etc.) will result in the cell phone being taken away from the student and other possible disciplinary consequences, including automatic suspension.
Phones taken from students during the regular school day will be taken to the school office where they can be picked up after school by a parent or legal guardian If students consistently disregard school guidelines they may be suspended or expelled from school.

St. Charles Borromeo School is not a public school; it is private property and school rules are not subject to the same guidelines as public property. A private property owner is legally entitled to set out whatever conditions the owner (St. Charles Borromeo School) sees necessary in order to maintain proper order on the premises (example: school uniforms). The school is entitled to take all steps necessary in order to see that all cell phones are turned off including the search of backpacks and/or lockers.

Teachers/Staff: We are role models at school for everything we expect of students – including the use of cell phones. Teachers/staff are expected to conform to the above guidelines. Cell phones are not to be used during class time; they may be used during prep or lunch time.
